Proudly Out: We'll Have Nunn of Him

Many in the LGBT community are excited about an Obama presidency except for one teeny, tiny little issue—who will win the VEEP sweepstakes? Many names have been bandied about and it seems the choice has come down to Hillary Clinton or Joe Biden and that the dreaded Sam Nunn is out of the running. But Political Editor Libby Post thinks Sam Nunn is still in the running.

Hypocrite of the Week: Sen. Elizabeth Dole
In the category of 'outrageous' political maneuvers, Sen. Elizabeth Dole’s attempt to attach the late Sen. Jesse Helms to a bill that would help fund the global fight against AIDS takes the cake. What was she thinking? Because she aligned a man who was never a friend of those affected by the disease with an important AIDS bill, Sen. Elizabeth Dole is the hypocrite of the week.

McCain Won’t Oppose Gay Marriage, Because He’s a Republican
In an interview with The New York Times, John McCain said he does not believe in gay adoption. However, he also said he wouldn't attempt to overturn same-sex marriage in California if elected. Once again, McCain’s feelings about equal rights for the LGBT community seem mixed, but are they really?

Hypocrite of the Week: Jesse Jackson
Rev. Jesse Jackson finally got his name associated with the 2008 presidential race this week, albeit not in the best of ways. Rather than using his notoriously rhythmic rhetoric for the sake of constructive discussion, Jackson put his foot in his mouth by disparaging Barack Obama, a man he has publicly supported heretofore, then offered up a weak apology. Nice try, but no dice.

Helmsian Politics: Dance on His Grave, But Keep Your Eyes Open
Jesse Helms is dead. We can all talk about dancing on his grave—or pissing on it as someone wrote—but all that gets us is some short-term emotional relief while the long-term effects of Helms’ political acumen and the damage it has reeked on our country are still part of our political landscape.

Proudly Out: Declaring Independence

July 4th is the grand finale of June's Pride Festivals capping off a month of parades, festivals, dykes on bikes, drag queens, lesbian and gay parents pushing strollers, and all those weddings in California, with massive displays of fireworks all over the country. Political Editor Libby Post examines how fighting for our independence means being an LGBT American.

Vitter and Craig's Marriage Amendment... and Now for the Punchline
Last week it was announced that David Vitter and Larry Craig were co-sponsoring a marriage amendment. Two of the most notorious sex offenders in the Senate were out doing their duty—the prostitute using, anonymous gay bathroom sex lovin’ duo is going to clean up America. Marriage will be between a man and a woman.

An Inconvenient Marriage: The Chasm Between Clinton and Obama Supporters
Just days ago, Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama held a picture-perfect photo op in Unity, New Hampshire to bridge the divide that continues to linger among their supporters. At the rally, Clinton’s praise for Obama was as well-crafted as his was of her. But are people really buying the unity pitch? And will it make a difference?

Proudly Out: Across the Great Divide
There are some in the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community who are uncomfortable with the fact that Barack Obama is reaching out to Evangelical Christians. How could he break bread—literally and metaphorically—with people who hate us? Doesn’t that mean he hates us too?

Why Barack Shouldn't Have Apologized for Wesley Clark’s John McCain Attack
The McCain camp is up in arms because Wesley Clark took their war hero and that prisoner of war story he’s been singing for years and downplayed the significance it plays in his ability to be president. This is politics, and I've got some other things Barack's camp should be calling out right about now.
